"Why is my holiday pay being deducted?"
When you are registered through Clockwork, one of the things we ask is if you are happy for us to advance your holiday pay. If you decide to accrue it this is not applicable to you. If you decided to opt in to advance your holiday pay you will see your holiday pay on the TOP Page of your Payslip (Reconciliation Statement) which breaks down all the employer costs inc Holiday Pay. We have to show it there as its an element associated with your assignment rate.
Check the bottom page of your payslip and you will see it appears again under "Payments" this is where you will see we have included holiday pay within your weekly wage. Holiday pay is like any type of wages I.E it is subject to Tax and National Insurance.

"I have my holiday accrued, what is the Holiday Employment Cost on my payslip?"
So if you have decided to accrue your holiday what will happen is we will deduct how much National Insurance and Apprenticeship Levy is subject to your holiday. This will also be put aside in your holiday pot. It may not look like it but with other competitors when you ask for an amount of holiday to be paid you would be subject to pay employment cost PLUS your own personal taxes. With this method when you ask for your amount you receive your amount. Any "Holiday Employment Cost" not needed when we pay the whole balance of holiday is refunded to you as we didn't need to pay it to HMRC.
"I have been paid the same amount for months now all of a sudden I am being paid less? Nothing has changed?"
When registered through Clockwork or any employer for that matter, your employer needs to do something called Automatic Enrolment. This means we have to enrol you into a workplace pension scheme. We can postpone the Automatic Enrolment for up to 3 months. After 3 months you will start to see pension contributions being deducted from your payments. This only applies if you are an eligible job-holder.
The current contributions are 3% Employer and 5% Employee.
Once we have sent your first contribution to our provider (SMART) they will make themselves known to you and write to you advising about the scheme.

"I can see pension is being deducted from my pay. I don't want to pay into a pension"
As above every employer in the UK has to automatically enrol you into a pension scheme. However, you can opt out. The pension provider will introduce themselves and advise how to opt out. If you opt out within 30 days of your first pension payment any pension contributions will be refunded. If you opt out after this 30 day window you can still stop paying into a pension but you will not be eligible for a refund.
"I have noticed I am paying tax but I haven't earned over my personal allowance?"
Double check on your payslip, the bottom page. Under your tax code does it say Week 1 / Month 1? If so, what this basically means is that instead of providing you your personal allowance in one lump sum. They only provide you with 1 week or a month worth of your personal allowance.
For Example:
If your tax code is 1257L you get £12570 tax free for the year.
On a Week 1 / Month 1 basis you get the above figure but only a weeks worth (So divide by 52 as that's how many weeks are in a year) Which provides you £242.00 tax free weekly. Any gross pay that exceeds £242.00 will then be subject to tax.
If you believe your tax code is wrong you can contact HMRC on 0300 200 3300

"I am on £15 an hour why are you only paying me £10.42?"
Before we begin, before you accepted your placement you should have received a KID document which explains how payments work.
When an agency partners with a company like Clockwork they increase they hourly pay to accommodate a few extra costs. This is called an Assignment Rate. The Assignment Rate is the rate provided to us from your agency which is a rate that is inclusive of:
How we break that down is as you have seen, the hours you worked multiplied by £10.42. What is this £10.42? This is the national minimum wage for anyone over the age of 23 years old. Whatever is left over we also pay this as a bonus. The reason we break this down is to show that as an employer we are still legally paying you the National Minimum Wage after all the above deductions have come out first.
In a nutshell your agency would still have to pay the above if they were paying you directly but your rate would be less. So instead they increase it to pay us what they would have paid to HMRC so we can pay it for them.
